What Sets Market America Apart.

I read a very interesting article on LinkedIn from Mellissah Smith, a marketing consultant and strategist, and how timely a read it was. I was talking with a very good friend recently about someone he knows looking into one of Market America’s diverse divisions – for sake of anonymity I will not mention either the division or the individuals in that conversation; but I can tell you the division is one of the most dynamic of all the divisions in Market America and perhaps the one that will become the most significant due to its impact on various groups of people and effect it has in other divisions of the company. The concern by the individual boiled down to nothing more than credibility… the real question was, “is it one of those things?”

The internet contains a wealth of information, but also contains even more erroneous disinformation which often leads to confusion and unnecessary challenges for both people looking for solutions, and people or organizations providing those solutions. It was Mellissah’s article “What Entrepreneurs of Growing Companies Know that You Don't” that got me thinking about the importance in getting the facts about any company before coming to a conclusion and action. That requires doing a little digging into reliable and substantiated resources rather than from self-serving deceivers and charlatans who’s only interest is in their own arrogant self-satisfaction, not the public’s interest who reads their bunkum. At the same time, Mellissah’s article sets the stage for doing a little parallel analysis between what she sees from successful growing companies and what MA has implemented over the years. To set the stage, allow me to share two undeniable truths about MA:

1) Market America’s “verifiable” track record of continual quarters of growth since opening their doors in 1992. That’s over 23 years of continued quarters of growth without a single down quarter since their inception in 1992! I don't know how many companies, if any in today’s economy, can make that same distinction of success. And, how many privately owned companies do you know that opens their books to the public with an independent audit each year. For the record, MA’s 2014 Annual report was conducted by Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP, one of the top 20 largest accounting firms in the U.S.

2) Market America has generated $5.3 billion in sales and has paid out over $2.9 billion back out to UnFranchise® owners. This is the highest percentage payout of any home based company that is over 10 years old.

Both of the above are substantiated facts about the company from reliable 3rd party sources. My entire career as an analyst and researcher taught me valuable skills, one which I have found to be crucially important is in being able to find and have all the facts before making any decision, especially decisions that could be career enhancing ones. The reason this is so important was revealed at the beginning of this article; it’s too easy to search for something and get disinformation about anyone, or any company. It takes work to get to the truth and if one does just a little bit of research, they will find ample information about Market America that shows the company to be a stellar and reliable company to get behind and to work with which leads me to the main purpose of this article.

For any company to have that kind of success, there must be an incredible infrastructure supporting it… and for that to occur, the people making up that infrastructure have to be, simply put, well organized and able to work cohesively together. There cannot be any prima donnas at any level to ensure a solid and cohesive infrastructure. Mellissah’s article hit those important points perfectly, but honestly, Market America does go above and beyond what is found in Mellissah’s post. I thought it would be of value and an interesting insight to use Mellissah’s marketing experience and analysis in her article to compare with what makes up this seemingly inimitable company so many others have tried unsuccessfully to replicate.

In Mellissah’s article “What Entrepreneurs of Growing Companies Know that You Don't”, she talks about Verne Harnish’s “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits”, specifically  “…three barriers to growth common among all growing firms: the need for the executive team to grow as leaders in their abilities to delegate and predict; the need for systems and structures to handle the complexity that comes with growth; and the need to navigate the increasingly tricky market dynamics that mark arrival in a larger marketplace.” If nothing else, the team behind the helm at Market America seem to be well versed in these areas. Let’s look at each one:

1) The need for the executive team to grow as leaders in their abilities to delegate and predict.  

In order for one to understand how MA has mastered this particularly important element of a successful company, we need to understand the company’s culture. For every successful person or company, it all starts with the “why”. Why one does what they do. Why does the company do what they do? Why is it important?

When people understand the “why”, everything else makes sense and that is where it all begins. From there each UnFranchise owner learns how to develop their own micro executive team through education and duplication. Strong leaders are best developed in small groups which Mellissah explains thoroughly. Teaching the art of duplication is the key in developing a strong and solid team. A successful UnFranchise consists of many smaller UnFranchises built exactly the same way.

Leadership within UnFranchises is uniquely developed in the field from an established MA Business Model which cannot be taught at any college or in any other industry, business or company, and MA has an excellent reputation for training and developing those who wish to become leaders. A significant component in developing leadership is learning and implementing the art of delegating and empowering people; once again, this is accomplished through the efforts of duplication. It is part of the building process of all UnFranchise businesses. The model for the UnFranchise could almost be summed up by simply imagining that each UnFranchise owner basically operates their own Independent MA company. If you will, an entire field of “mini MA’s”… and that’s powerful!

It’s from these leaders of successful UnFranchises that Market America identifies and draws upon to fill executive positions. What better way to build a successful business than by each executive member having a dog in the hunt? By UnFranchise owners having their own success on the line and that of their team, MA continues to be on top of their game! Not only is the executive team part of the important MA decision making process, they are also in the field constantly exposed to changes in the marketing environment on a “daily” bases. They have firsthand knowledge of what’s happening in the real world rather than relying on research from people not close to, or in the field. There is no replacement for firsthand experience, knowledge and understanding in all areas of relationships, technology and most importantly, the consumer’s wants and needs.

2) The need for systems and structures to handle the complexity that comes with growth.      

At the very beginning, JR Ridinger had this vision where anyone could go to one place to search, compare, and shop for whatever they want or need – they should be in control. The mission and objective was to help keep costs down and make it more convenient for consumers to find and purchase anything they want, all in one location. In order for this to take place it requires the entire executive team and field to be in sync in order to implement JR’s vision, and via a uniquely organic feedback system, deliver continuous and timely updates to MA on what works and what doesn’t. This lends itself to a much more robust, intuitive and responsive adjustment process to ensure both the system and infrastructure operate at maximum efficiency.

MA has always been known as the leader in technology development and trends as changes occur in consumer buying habits, as new research leads to better or newer products and services, and as marketing, social media trends, and technologies changes occur on the internet. Every aspect in this world of ever changing environments and consumer requirements is constantly evaluated in order to keep up with, or stay ahead of what is taking place in the real world… at all levels! A term that is consistently drilled into UnFranchise owners which is a crucial component to their success is Measure, Monitor, Adjust, and Control. Many company’s leave out the one crucial component “adjust” in their operational risk management process. Market America ensures everyone understands these key components in developing a successful UnFranchise.

3) The need to navigate the increasingly tricky market dynamics that mark arrival in a larger marketplace.

We already talked about how the executive team has a pulse on what’s going on in the field. That is one important ingredient in understanding the market dynamics. But having a highly knowledgeable and skilled Information Technology team of experts is also important. MA maintains some of the smartest and brightest in their field, at all levels making them one of the fastest growing retailers. Not only was MA ranked #57 Internet Retailer in the 2014 Top 100 Web Retails, but 2014 Mobile 500 named Market America the “Fastest Growing Mobile Commerce Retailer”.

"Market America (No. 250) is the fastest-growing merchant in the 2014 Mobile 500 with mobile commerce revenue that will grow nearly 600% to $7.4 million in 2013. Market America attributes its mobile growth to a vastly expanded product inventory and updated versions of its mobile app, which the company says accounts for about 20% of its mobile commerce sales."

Growth comes by not only being agile and having a keen sense of what is about to happen next and acting upon it, but by also keeping the field updated. How else can the field continue to be on the forefront of what’s going on and take advantage in order to better serve their customers? Every 6 months MA gets together with the field at their International Convention which is held in Greensboro, NC, and at their World Conference in Miami, FL. Market America shares with the field the latest trends, updates, and new technologies development. They provide training on what’s been implemented, education on the latest “consumer driven” products they introduce as well as insight on what the company is currently working on. In other words, every six months it’s as if the company is brand new for MA is always on top of the latest and greatest in technology and in what the consumer is demanding in products and services. MA’s focus is on Market Driven products and services… not bringing new unknown products or services that require selling. This is a product brokerage company. They bring products and services to the consumer based on their consumption and demand.

In conclusion

As you read through Mellissah’s article, each aspect covered by her is masterfully implemented at all levels within Market America and UnFranchises. Is there room for improvement? Of course… Like JR and other leaders in the company will tell you, the Model is perfect – it’s the people who implement the model that is not perfect. They will try to mess it up, they will try it their way, they will try to find shortcuts, but at the end of the day, those who stick with the model are successful. But with all that, and for each and every UnFranchise Owner out there, one thing that is consistent are UnFranchise owners enjoying being handsomely compensated on their efforts through a proven business model and system with continued quarters of growth – there is no limit as to how far one can go with Market America and an UnFranchise business.

Mellissah Smith’s article should be read by everyone who is even thinking of going out on their own, either to start up their own company, or partnering up with any home based or direct selling business. A special focus should be on three sections in her article: “They need to delegate to others”, “Systems and Structures are imperative”, and “Data Drives Prediction and Watch the Market.”
There are so many things that all entrepreneurs need to learn, but mostly you can do so from those who have already become successful and are able to show you the road.  
Reading books by authors that have not been successful is a waste of time. They may teach you about habits, but their only success may be selling books and that will have little relevance to your business. Google information if you want it to be something that is lacking in fact or experience, and always note, when interviewed, people only say what they think you want to hear or read, it may not necessarily be the case.
Mellissah’s final statement above gives us a roadmap to follow. What I have learned about life is how great and easy it is to learn by doing rather than by reading. What sets Market America apart from all other companies is how thorough they are in educating UnFranchise Owners during the business building process. Each person is different and the UnFranchise business model allows for each person to customize their own business based upon that one and very important word… their “WHY”. I highly recommend anyone serious about moving forward in finding a business they would like to go into, to properly research the company or business before making a decision. It behooves everyone to do more than skim the surface of the World Wide Web for information. Anyone really committed to making a change in their lives needs to be equally committed in digging for the whole story… for getting the fact in order to get to the truth. That is was I did… I found out what sets Market America apart from all other company’s… whatever company you’re researching, make sure you do the same.

The Voice… What it Teaches Musicians

Last night was the beginning of The Voice’s ninth season… wow, it has been on that long? I have really enjoyed watching this show over all the other talent shows out there for a couple of reasons but what I my biggest take away is the messaging; the educational aspect along with being entertaining.

This season coaches include two constants, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton along with last season’s winner Pharrell Williams and the ever stunning and beautiful Gwen Stefani. These four, as with past coaches, brings more to our living room then just entertainment; they bring a ton of very educational and inspirational "real life stories" and solutions which are incredibly valuable for any musician.

Anyone honing their craft can benefit from what we learn from the beginning with "Blind Auditions", to the season’s finale. Sure, you won’t have the hours of intense education, training, and day in and day out tutelage afforded those who get onto a coach's team, but for the serious musician, great tips and advice abound.

The opening video last night tells it all… these coaches love what they do, not just writing music and singing, but helping other artists as well… and Gwen hit the nail squarely on the head… “It feels like a family here and everybody wants to help each other, and I want to be a part of that…”


So, what did we learn from just the first 10 minutes of The Voice?

Adam Levine: “In every one of these artists you see yourself…  because everybody struggles so you immediately feel connected with everyone that is on the show.“

Blake Shelton: “The Voice offers training you can’t get anywhere else, knowledge you can’t get anywhere else because its artists working with artists.  

Pharrell Williams: “If I got another win means that the artist on my team has won. That’s why I love this show so much because it’s not about me, it’s really about helping them change their lives”

Gwen Stefani: What artist can learn from Gwen? Style and packaging. Check out her Instagram page for example. For women artists, you can see the incredible potential there for marketing an entire range of fashion trends. On her website, check out the cool shoes, purses, pants and an entire variety of cool stuff... and when it comes to cosmetics... women you have a gold mine there. And this is not just for women artists either! Men, you should also take note from Gwen when it comes to marketing. It has, is, and forever will be all about what fans love when it comes to who you are, your image and what you love in and about your life... 

It’s called Lifestyle Marketing.

KEEP IT REAL! 


It's about branding yourself and being able to market yourself. No matter if it is a fan, a merchant, a label, or even someone who may invite you for an audition on The Voice. What is it about you that makes someone want to buy you? We certainly can learn a great deal from what we are seeing on The Voice.

It’s not the artists either that provide instructional and educational “messages”. Take for example Mark Hood’s mother Jodi “At 10 you shouldn’t be talking about babies, or other things that some of the other artists were singing… it wasn’t the singing, it was ‘the message’.” Jodi was speaking out about what children should be listening to and Mark's mother always made that point very clear to her son; so was there any surprise as to the direction Mark Hood was to take? 

Music that inspires, lifts us up… music that makes us feel good will always trump music that trashes people, groups or society in general or has any trashy and immoral messaging. Musicians, if they really want to be successful in this industry, should focus on what the majority of listeners enjoy. Why do you think The Voice is so popular? It’s certainly isn’t trash mouth music. Yes, the coaches do make it entertaining... but at the end of the day, it's the music that moves us and their stories that inspire us... and that is what moves fans.

Get those fans... engage those fans, help your fanbase want to associate with you and support you. In today's music industry, that's what's used to gauge and measure the success of artists.

Listen to all the great stories, the hardship, the losses etc.; watch as they inspire the audience and even the coaches. Only one of the many reasons I enjoy watching The Voice. And you just never know who is going to surprise you next with their incredible “raw” talent... and then see them grow. 

The takeaways from watching The Voice is simply amazing. I was talking with a good friend of mine just today, someone who has been in the industry for his entire life… someone who has worked with some of the greatest artists. Just on the first night he saw two artist that he would have loved to have an opportunity to work with… but he said they all were great. So if you’re a musician, you should take notice of “The Voice”… you just might learn something that will make a difference for you and your future in music… and if you aren’t a musician… don’t worry, there are plenty of stories there that inspire all of us that no matter what. Each artists we have seen all have a passion and a dream... and they have not let anything get in the way in pursuing their dream... no matter what! Everyday I watch The Voice it teaches me to never stop... never stop helping others in reaching their dreams. What has it taught you?

Never Give Up – No Matter What

How many of us just want to give up? We hear in the news all the time how people just give up when they lose their job and are unable to find another. How many of us give up if the job seems to be just too tough? Even I have felt disappointed at times, discouraged, and even out of place sometimes now that I’m retired.

I spent my entire career in a profession where I was confident in what I was doing, achieving… I felt I was contributing to a critical need, so nothing stopped me. I rarely had that feeling of giving up… rather when something wasn’t going right, I made changes. But after retiring, things did change. But was it me, or my situation?

After retiring I no longer had that burning drive; everything I did now became a hobby, after all, I didn’t need the money… well I thought. I did enough to get by, helping people as a consultant I could work my own hours. I did spend much of my time helping others… and as I became more and more aware, helping them with their dreams. I had up to that point figured I no longer had any interests or dreams of my own. Again, I was retired.

So what does this have to do with anything? Because I retired, everything changed for me. My perspective of how I work with people remained the same, but I needed to change that perspective. The dynamics were different; my expectations needed to be adjusted, but again, given I was retired I just never gave it much thought. Goals? If I had one it certainly wasn’t the same as everyone else’s… hey I was retired. I was always there for others... and their team, but it wasn’t my team.

At one time in my career I had the responsibility for putting together a production team while in the pre-cast concrete business; it became a great team. Never had so few, did so much, for so little under the worst conditions. But we were a family although we were not related... that was the way I worked... it is the way I like to treat my "team". During my career in the Navy, we built strong teams… leadership training and application is one of the most important proficiencies one can achieve in life and the Navy did an excellent job in that area. The common thread among all the various jobs I had was we “all” had a job to do… we were all professionals. Didn’t matter if we were slinging mud, or working in the world of electronics and high technology, we worked together as a team. So building a team has never been something new. Then I retired… and it all changed for me… my way of thinking and the way I used to do things just didn't seem to be clicking, and it started weighing heavy on my mind. Before retiring, we all did our jobs without being concerned about where the money was coming from; we got paid every week, or whatever the schedule was.

When I retired I just couldn’t simply lay around doing nothing. Before retiring I dabbled in the web business as a result of affiliating with a product brokerage company. I had some health issues and found their nutritional line of Isotonix supplements turned my life around so I decided to affiliate with them. One of the most important aspects of my life has been to only associate with people, organizations, companies I can trust and rely on. It just so happened that this one company had a rock solid history and a great track record; and to be honest there was one very important aspect about this company that made a significant impression on me; they had a strong family culture built in – one where even if there were no financial connections, everyone was there helping everyone else in a “team” environment. I felt at home. Given I had been with them for so long during my years as an analyst and consultant, I never had the real desire to build a business until a few years after retiring. Things have a way of changing one's mind when there are changes in one's financial stability... or lack there of.

After a few years after retiring I began to make changes in my focus but things just didn’t seem to click as well as I had hoped. Ever have that happen to you? What do you do about it? Blame others? Get mad? Worry about the problems? What good does that do? But hey, we all know it’s easy to quit… it’s so easy to talk bad about someone, something, or how miserable life treats you - or how “unfair” everything is. Ever hear that one? (Don’t get me started) It takes courage to say it is my fault… I am the one who is the problem. It is so easy to give up on yourself… but I submit to you this nugget of insight… if you give up, NOT everything and everyone “else” is wrong. Who was it that made the brilliant observation that you are always right?

If you say you can’t, you’re right / if you say you can, you’re right.


Some people can play baseball, some people can’t; some people can play football, some can’t. Pick any sport… some people have a gift, some don’t. It may be a physical impossibility that is the cause. But then, what about those who can… are they all equal? No… those who practice and work the hardest will be better than those who don’t. Look at golfers… now you know you have to have some coordination correct? But the one who practices the most will be the ones who win more championships. The musician who practices the most gets to be part of the orchestra. Same with anything in life. It all boils down to this... we all are given choices... the choice to complain, the choice to give up, the choice to be lazy, the choice to work hard, the choice to work smart, etc. What choice will you make?

But here is what caused me to think about my own challenges which recently had been causing me stress and frustration, and was the impetus to writing this blog at 3:00 am in the morning. (When you have something in your head, get it down in writing otherwise you lose it.) Her name is Jordan Bone… several years ago she was injured in a severe car accident sustaining a C6 injury. As any of us could testify, when we’re young we believe we’re invincible, nothing can stop us. But when thrown a life changing blow, becoming a paraplegic totally devastated Jordan. Jordan was depressed, unsure of what the future could be like for someone who could not walk and no longer able to use her hands. Feel free to read her blog but it was her video that really got to me… and got me to thinking straight again. When you watch the video, her story will hit home to many. The point she brought home to me was profound - she made a choice... she never gave up!

We all have challenges… we just have to be honest with ourselves when dealing with them. So, do you really want to give up? You think you have it bad? You think you’re the only one in the world who has been dealt a bad hand, or is unlucky? Think about people who I consider heroes like Jordan Bone… this video is quite inspiring; and reminded me of the type of person I want to be around… the type of person I want on my team. Now I understand even more why people I work and associate with over the past several years look for those who have “The Right Stuff”. They may not start out with it… but I know, if I ask the right questions, if I find that person who has the desire… together we can make things happen. 

Don’t give up on yourself, don’t give up on others. But caution: know this… do not under any circumstances work with the wrong people! The ones that always complain, the ones who always tell you how bad they have it - run fast and hard away from them.

Which Road Will You Take?

How often have you talked with someone looking for a solution, a way out of their current situation,possible” solution all of a sudden they become distant and not interested because they think it may be too hard? As Seth so clearly illustrates in his post “Of course it's difficult...”, people look for shortcuts and are too often unwilling to take the necessary steps to secure their dreams, their financial future because they’re looking for that “easy way out”. These are the same people who jump from one thing to another without any real compass to guide them, or they simply do the “same thing” each and every day thinking eventually things will change in their world of insanity. It doesn't matter what industry, profession, or job the person is in, the same common denominator is always found with the same three words coming out of their mouths “It’s too difficult!” yet when you speak with them about a “

Well of course it’s difficult… that’s life isn't it? 

These very same challenges are also seen in the music industry aren't they? And given there are so many resources available for musicians, where is the musician’s guide, their roadmap, their compass? Who really cares about the direction they are going? Don't get me wrong, there are agencies who do this, but they are very, and almost all the time exclusively selecting musicians who they see having great talent – but what about those who are good, have talent and have a great deal of potential? Who is taking the precious time “needed” in providing the right path to their success, their future? Is there anyone asking the really tough questions like, what are your goals, what are your aspirations, wants, wishes or even what is your aim in life? Or, how about this one… “What is your objective in playing music?

Everything we do in life that amounts to anything of value is difficult – of course. But if the musician doesn't have a clear idea of the why they're doing it, how can anyone possibly help them. The music industry is not broken as many would claim, it is evolving. And when there is evolution doesn't there have to be adaptation? So who’s up for the change in the music industry and who’s up for doing what needs to be done in order to adapt to those changes? Who is up for “Finding a new path up the mountain…”?

It appears one company is catching the eyes of musicians. Just recently I met up with an artist who sought out Conquer Entertainment. Why? He saw opportunities and resources that just cannot be found anywhere else. He saw direction, education, systems, resources – like a Sherpa which one can hire to find the “tried and true” path up the mountain, Conquer Entertainment’s own Sherpa (Certified Artist Developers) help musicians find the “tried and true” path to financial success.

Will it be easy? Of course not! Will it be worth it? Well, just like Seth said, “When we intentionally seek out the difficult tasks, we’re much more likely to actually create Value.” And isn’t that exactly what we all want? That certainly is what Conquer Entertainment and all divisions within Market America strive for… “VALUE”!

Perhaps when more artists begin to see those achievements Conquer Entertainment continue pulling off, for all musicians in all genres, then perhaps more and more musicians will begin to understand Seth’s statement “The only things that are scarce in the world of connection and services and the net are the things that are difficult, and the only things that are valuable are the things that are scarce.” Perhaps that is why so many see the huge value in Conquer Entertainment... they are truly-one-of-a-kind... they eat up difficulties for breakfast in order to cultivate value in the field!

Conquer Entertainment Coming to Town?

It just can't be any clearer than this – not only does Conquer Entertainment continue to come up with brilliant ideas to help musicians, they actually implement them and their latest idea is going to make it so literally every artist has a shot – if they sincerely want it. And oh how like minds really do think alike for then there was this article posted just this morning by Seth Godin “The Circus is coming to Town”. Since it was a short post and to the point, allow me to quote Seth’s timely piece of wisdom:
Too often, we wait. We wait to get the gig, or to make the complex sale, or to find the approval we seek. Then we decide it's time to get to work and put on our show. 
The circus doesn't work that way. They don't wait to be called. They show up. They show up and sell tickets. 
When you transform the order of things, the power shifts. "The circus is going to be here tomorrow, are you going?" That's a very different question than, "are you willing to go out on a limb and book the circus? If you are, we'll come to town..." 
People respond to forward motion. Auctions are always more exciting than "price available on request."
So for musicians the question now just might be “are you going to sit around waiting to be called, or are you going to show up?

Conquer continues to prove over and over they are not waiting around, not for an approval, not for time, nor for someone to get “the gig” – they are pushing the envelope, willing to create the power shift in the music industry and they are not waiting for an invitation – they are creating opportunities, going after and showing the world just how to, as the beloved Casey Kasem would say,
… keep reaching for the stars”.

Last night’s proof of concept demonstrated, no established, they are now able to bring the “circus to town” with the first ever Conquer Entertainment’s Concert Series Broadcast with Walter Finley. And if this was any indication as to their dedication and talent they poses with their team and field of musicians and Certified Artist Developers, I would not be surprised if gigs begin lining up at their doorsteps… not to mention artists looking for their opportunity.

Conquer Entertainment went out on a limb last night, and in just a few short hours came up with a “Grand Slam!” Conquer Entertainment’s live concert was preceded by a Conquer Business Overview by Amanda Ridinger, CEO of Conquer Entertainment, live on unfranchise.meeton.com/ and in front of a packed house in New York. Technology has taken everything we do in society to a whole new height, and Conquer Entertainment certainly knows how to leverage that technology and is taking advantage at every opportunity. Knowing about Amanda’s scheduled live Conquer Business Overview, Jorgen Bailey and his team at Conquer Entertainment decided to go for it. Around mid-day a broadcast went out through their social media network letting everyone know of the pending event. At around 8:15 PM last night, it happened, the first Conquer Entertainment Concert Series aired... and without a hitch. Simply unbelievable. Knowing Jorgen like I do, if asked why now he most likely would say something like “There just isn't a better time than now!” And it was a great event to say the least!

One thing I have come to learn about what goes on behind the scenes at Conquer Entertainment, they are using their imagination to the max. I bet if you were to go through their corridors and offices, you just might see something up on the wall from Benny Bellamacina like “You are only limited by your own imagination!” I am now waiting with eager anticipation for their next surprise… and if I was a musician I would not be waiting around – I would be finding out how to become a part of this new and exciting chapter in the world of music. I like their hash-tag #GetConquer.

“Walk with Me” – An Inspirational Video

I remembered growing up in the 50’s and 60’s listening to the radio while doing my homework. It doesn’t matter what generation you are, homework often was a drag, but listening to pop and country songs back then the singers, groups, and bands made you feel good – they were inspirational, moving, entertaining, and mostly just plain fun to listen to and it had a way of motivating and lifting your spirits. They were good times, they were fun times and they were entertaining times.



Through the years music has changed in many ways as has the industry but one thing will never change – beautiful music as it continues to evolve! It never ceases to amaze me as to the never endless stream of originality coming from talented artists – I guess that’s why it’s called art, which by the way, does not have to be limited to the visual form alone. Art may commonly be defined as an expression of human creative skill and imagination in visual form such as paintings or sculptures, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power, but I think everyone can agree music is far more stimulating than any inanimate object. When both visual and audio is combined, emotions are experienced at a much greater level and that is precisely what happened when I watched “Walk with Me” by Walter Finley for the first time.

I had an opportunity to sit down with this amazing artist who has created some beautiful songs that literally tug at your heartstrings and I was able to learn more about his inspiration behind the song… and when I asked about his video I was surprised at the story behind the making of the “Walk with Me”. First, Walter’s Experience.

“Walk with Me” – The Inspiration: When I was talking with Walter I asked him to explain the story behind the making of “Walk with Me”, his answer was twofold.

First: “The song poured out at me sometime during 2014 while in the studio, and to me it was my interpretation of God saying ‘Walk with Me’ because my life had been so hard and the ‘burned down house of your life’ was my life that was trashed. I pictured His hand reaching down and helping me out of the house… Stay close to Me, and we will walk together and we’ll get through this and figure it out…”

During the same time period, Diane (now Walter’s fiancé) was going through a very rough time in her life with both her mother and father passing. Diane had to leave Walter to take care of family matters but one thing Walter said that stuck with Diane just before her leaving was “I will never leave you” which is referenced in the song “I won’t leave your side”. Diane left and they didn’t see each other except for once in a while but they kept their relationship alive. Walter said the song “Walk with Me” had such a profound impact on both him and Diane’s life “it is like our wedding song now.” The song represents the time where Walter and Diane were apart but by staying close to God “… you’re not alone, and together you will climb, climb through the wreckage of your life.

Walter said “… when I played it for her (Diane) first, I told her I felt that God gave me these words, it was His song and there was nothing we had to do to it. When I went into the studio to record an album of slow music, a lot of people were against it, but Ben Wisch (producer of my EP) knew what I wanted to do and believed in the songs.” Walter was tenacious in his decision, he wanted to do something special with an album that would have an inspirational impact on people, his fans, and anyone looking for music that would take them to a different spiritual level. “Music and song originally came about as prayer… much of the music today is nothing like that so I purposely took a chance to create something completely different.” But is it really “completely different”?

Walter went on to talk about trends “… if you look at the trends, everything is trending to ballads right now. When you watched the New Year’s Eve show, all the bands were playing ballads.” Walter also wanted to make sure his album was open to all to “feel the love, feel relaxed, and feel at peace.” And isn’t that what we need more of in this world?

Second: Walter is very involved in helping people, both from a personal hands-on approach and as a role model, he strives to inspire others through his music and unique style. Walter would like to see more people getting behind artists presenting messages of togetherness and hope “because the world is becoming unhinged at the seams again… we need music that will help bring people together, not separate people. That is why I didn’t originally put a religious context on the song – I want everyone to enjoy it without any specific religious connection, I want “everyone” to feel connected and together. And music does that. We had problems back in the 70’s, right… 60’s? And they had musicians write songs to bring people together.”

When asked about the making of his video I was quite surprised by Walter’s answer – he had no part in the making of the video, it was the inspiration of Mr. Chuck Fargione. Chuck has been following Walter and his musical career for a few years now, and I had the opportunity to catch up with Chuck for his story, what inspired him, what was it about Walter’s song “Walk with Me” that stimulated his creative juices.

“Walk with Me” – The Video: Probably the most intriguing observation I took away from my interview with Chuck Fargione was his view that when too many people get involved in decision making it takes away the “creativity” and ability to be able to see things the way the world sees them because there is an audience that your trying to attract and make happy. Too many people involved removes that creativity and ability to meet and respond to the right audience. “It’s really kinda nice to sit by yourself and line up all the special moments in life…” and that is exactly what Chuck was able to do with Walter’s song, he lined up and matched all those special moments of “Walk with Me” with visuals and put together an extremely touching video.

Chuck’s ability in creating his video from Walter’s song speaks volumes about Walter’s creativity and talent in not only writing a powerful story, but having it accompanied by a very emotional piece of music. I hope that creativity and style such as seen in Walter’s music will become more mainstream with the younger generation of musicians, bands, groups, and song writers… music that will bring back those days with songs that are inspirational, moving, entertaining, and mostly just plain fun to listen to – music that will once again find ways to motivate and lift our spirits like “Walk with Me” did to me. I will tell you this, when I asked my wife Cheryl to come in and watch the video for the first time… she had tears running down her face at the end and to me that was verification of what a great song and video this was and that is what the audience is in search of! A beautiful song and great Video… and in Chucks own words “Music should speak for itself!” “Walk with Me” certainly does speak for itself.

What are musicians looking for today?

For those who are serious about a career in music, they may tell you they would like to have some sort of security. But if asked what that might look like, they will probably tell you they have no idea. Why? Maybe because there has never been “security” in the music industry! It has always been a dog-eat-dog world. If they are honest with you, musicians may confess that in order to be successful it may require them to be creative, to diversify their income and be proactive. If they wait for something to happen, for that big break in their career, most likely they will be waiting for a very long time.

In an interview with Jeremy Gantz, contributing editor with In These Times magazine, Makaya McCraven was asked if the record industry’s collapse had an impacted on his career.

I've never had a livelihood that was based off of record sales — the only people who made lots of money off of records were selling huge numbers. But one of the things I see in the music industry now is the gap between the haves and the have-nots, and the disappearing middle class of musicians. These days, big labels put a lot of money into promoting big-name artists whom they know will sell. In doing so, they've taken more and more money out of artist development. So you have fewer mid-level artists who are signed and making a living. 

We've seen a lot of industries for working musicians disappear. The advertising industry once provided a lot of work for musicians. Now ad songs can be easily done by one person at a computer.

And then you see, with regular local gigs, that the pay scale hasn't changed in 30 years. These older guys, they used to make good money playing a jingle in the studio before going to play a club gig that night. They got paid the same rate that I’m getting paid to play. So you can see how tough it can be — the cost of living has changed.

Probably the most significant observation McCraven shared was his belief of what he needs to do in order to be successful — words of wisdom which perhaps should become “The Musician’s Mantra” by which all artists acknowledge and adopt: “…if you’re constantly trying to create opportunities for yourself, it’s very possible to have a career in music.

McCraven went on to say “You don’t even necessarily have to be that great, unfortunately, if you’ve got good business skills. There are two sides to it, for me. One is: what am I doing as an artist? Am I creating my own product to sell, to become known and draw people to my shows? The other important side is becoming known by other musicians as someone who’s reliable, as someone who can play the music well and show up on time — you want to be professional and to not cause any rifts.

If I may, there just might be a third side which is being overlooked by many artists which could make all the difference in the world… especially in today’s economy and that is, “how do I make a difference for my fans, my audience, everyone I with whom I am associated with?” We know there have been many success stories of entrepreneurs becoming successful by their providing something no one else has… by making one’s life better either in a product or service. This after all is Capitalism, or Free Enterprise is all about. Could this also be applied to music? Well, that is what the dedicated team behind Conquer Entertainment believe. Could this be the wave of the future? Could others see it as well? Then I met Jermaine Purifory.

When I was first introduced to Jermaine and began listening to his music, I was profoundly moved by the quality of his sound. Now I am no music aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, but I know what my ears like… and they were keenly focusing on the quality of this young artist sound. I am actually blessed in being associated with two very talented artists. Melion has a quality that is actually quite unique along with having what I would like to call stage charisma, the ability to really move his audience and boy does he ever move them. It was during my interview with Jermaine that he confirmed what I was hoping would become the wave of the future. Jermaine had actually sought out Conquer Entertainment because he saw the opportunity from the eyes of an entrepreneur as well as an artist for he was implementing “The Musicians Mantraif you’re constantly trying to create opportunities for yourself, it’s very possible to have a career in music.

During the interview he said he had been searching for ways in which to “expand far beyond what we have available to us now”. Come to find out, Jermaine was referring to finding opportunities where musicians could monetize their craft, their love of music, and to afford creating a profitable and long lasting career. It was a memorable interview, one I only wish I would have recorded so I could listen over and over.

Here was an artist who was very proactive in moving his career forward, but just how proactive I could not have known until he was to join us at the 2015 ma World Conference in Miami, Florida. He was all set and ready to go when he receive an unbelievable surprise in that Jermaine had won the first Hilton Rock Star Contest in which contestants submitted a video of themselves performing an original vocal or instrumental song. Jermaine was notified that he was the recipient of a four-day, all-expenses-paid trip to the Grammy Awards for two, including airfare and hotel, plus seats at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8 and access to the official after-party. You just can’t make this up folks... Jermaine would miss out on the greatest Event in Market America history, but he would not be missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity — an all expense paid VIP trip to the Grammys.

Susan Pierce from In Life Entertainment posted Jermaine’s story “Cleveland resident's original song wins him trip to Grammys”, sharing a very impressive element of Jermaine’s character which helps us in understanding what exactly contributes to his success…
“Jermaine Purifory has spent the last decade building a name for himself. Local audiences first heard him sing when he was a student at Lee University and a soloist with Voices of Lee, the a cappella group featured on NBC's "Sing-Off." His voice and stage presence made him a favorite with audiences at the Chattanooga Theatre Center, where he won Miss Annie Awards, which honor the best in the center's performances.”
It is a great story, one which everyone should have a chance to read. Talent comes from so many different forms, and it is really a great story just how he happen to learn about the contest (the very last day to enter) and what he had to do in order to submit for the contest. Nothing fancy, no studio, no expensive equipment, no manager, no producer, nothing but “true grit” in order to get er done as Larry the Cable Guy would say. I mean really, playing a track of your music and singing into a cell phone… and win? Now that is awesome talent!


So what’s next with Jermaine? Jermaine has got some great ideas and plans ahead with Conquer Entertainment — helping artists is only one small part of his strategic planning in moving not just his career forward, but creating a better experience for fans and consumers alike.

Again, I just cannot over emphasize just how much of a pleasure it is in working with such a stellar and dedicated group of professionals behind the scenes at Conquer Entertainment — for their talent, vision, and Amanda Ridinger's belief in her dream to help change an industry that has been screaming for help. It is their hard work and dedication that talent like Jermaine can find and partner with in order to make a huge difference in their lives. Conquering Miami - Bringing The Right Tools to maWC2015

For years experts in the Music Industry have been discussing changes that are needed in their industry, expressing how the music industry is dying, nobody buys music anymore, and how something needs to be done – all agreeing the industry needs to be saved. There has been ample discussion on the problem and many have come up with ideas however all they have been are ideas… it appears not much in actual action has been taking place. It truly has been a difficult challenge to say the least, and one which appears to be problematical even for experts to think outside the box. In an article by Brad Haugen, CMO of SB Projects and chairman of Pencils of Promise, entitled Data Will Save Music, he just may have come close in peeking outside the box from a very accurate perspective “… we are in the business of music, and it’s time to turn around and look at what other industries thrive on: science (more specifically, data).” And where have you heard that before? Brad certainly brings up another excellent point:
Great artistry thrives on innovation, and innovation is often built on the back of information. In the landscape today, so many of the parties at the table don’t share information often enough. You have agents, labels, managers, artists, retailers and distributors, merchandise companies, promoters, licensees and the list goes on. That doesn't even include social platforms that only give us a small percentage of the data they have.
His article was quite interesting but the message continues to always focus on one point, music. OK, so he makes a great point: “collaboration and opening the floodgates of information would change everything”, but change what? How does that increase an artist’s income? Brad never touches on that, his only point was in using data to make informed decisions which hits the target dead center. The question is, make informed decisions to do what? His final though was
The music industry gets a bad rep because people think it lacks sophistication. I think it just lacks tools. Some of the smartest and most creative people in the world work in music. If we gave them the right weapons, I’d head to the frontier with them any day of the week.
Think what Brad might say should he hear about what happened in Miami earlier this month.
Wow… I was on the right track, but in the wrong station.
Which brings us to, as Brad would say, “The right weapon”. Yep, Conquer Entertainment did it. It was the best ever appearance at any of Market America’s major events after coming onto the stage (pardon the pun) just a few short years ago. BELIEF - The Strongest Emotion We Have!

It was a special and memorable 30 minutes with an icon! Fat Joe’s story about why - why he decided to become part of an incredible forward thinking business. He was already successful as a "gangster rapper" so why... why change? Could it be he saw his future had to change? It is often said we are who we surround ourselves with. Surround yourself with successful entrepreneurs, successful and positive people, moral and supportive role models - what else could we possibly expect!

It was just a little over a year ago that Fat Joe was sitting in a jail literally across from where we were this past weekend at the American Airline Arena in Miami, Florida. Every night he would read the same book over, and over, and over again, and when asked by Chef Jr. who was also in jail why read the same book so much, Fat Joe responded with a very interesting answer, including this statement which everyone should heed:
“It’s my understanding, if you do the same thing over and over again, you can’t expect a different outcome.”
Fat Joe changed his life… and it was all as a result of one word…”Believe”.
“…from a kid from the Bronx, from the projects, to make something out of nothing, I gotta believe in myself. Nobody believes in me, more than me!”
Probably the best part of his talk was about addiction. Not addiction of food, not the addiction of drugs, not the addiction of alcohol, but the addiction of doubt. This was without question one of the most powerful and moving presentation in front of over 20,000 people this past weekend.

But his Belief came from a story that is sure to tug at your heart... and it was about his mother.

I am sharing this story from our 2015 World Conference in Miami because of the enormous impact it had on so many. It was inspirational to say the least. Belief is the most powerful emotion we have without it we could never make positive changes to our lives.

Listen to Fat Joe’s full story… it will be the best thing you can do for yourself… regardless what business you are in, regardless what venture you've started… “Especially” if you are a musician. Joseph Antonio Cartagena's story will put new life into whatever you do... so long as you BELIEVE in yourself, BELIEVE in what you are doing and just as important, BELIEVE in others with whom you surround yourself with.

When Everything Goes Wrong! What do you do?

I do not know of a single person who can “honestly” say they have never suffered defeat or setbacks… struggled at some time or have had one of those days when they just wanted to give up. Ever had one of those days?

I remember working with a group of fellow entrepreneurs in a workshop designed to help each other stay focused and on point in our business and to meet timelines and tasks each week for a period of 6 weeks.

On the 5th week I got sidetracked and lost not only focus, but momentum. I don’t believe I am the only one who has ever had this challenge. As hard as it may be sometimes, I refuse to succumb to the use of the word “Problem”.  Problems are often seen as “difficult situations” which many people struggle with in finding solutions for where as a “Challenge” can be seen as an “invitation to compete” - a contest or a dare to do something regardless to the level of difficulty however, it takes the “DESIRE” to change. A problem can, and often does, create stagnation where a challenge stirs imagination. However, it doesn't happen instantaneously or overnight, and it requires us to identify his or her desire to make the change. It takes an honest evaluation of one’s self and their “WHY”.

It is amazing just how one thing can lead to another, how a road block can often times create new excuses. As I was struggling to get back on track I happened across an excellent post written by Marc Chernoff, “8 Things to Remember When Everything Goes Wrong” and a simple quote:

The best way out is always through.  ―Robert Frost. 


In his post, Marc writes about something his grandmother wrote in her journal which spawned an epiphany: “Truth be told, happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them.  Imagine all the wondrous things your mind might embrace if it weren't wrapped so tightly around your struggles.  Always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost.  Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left.”

With that, he posted 8 ideas or reminders as he puts it that may help motivate us when we need it the most. You can read his entire post yourself, but here were my takeaways:

1. Pain is part of Growing: Two kinds of pain… Pain that Hurts and Pain that Changes You. Often times in our business we have to dig deep to find our reason Why... why are we doing this business. We must have a STRONG WHY otherwise the pain may bring us to a halt… but “Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward. And that’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless circumstances force us to.” How many people are simply comfortable in their everyday routine, with their “WHY” never that strong. I know mine wasn't… but now with the economy the way it is, the why has gotten stronger. You just have to do what you have to do!

2. Everything in Life is Temporary: “Just because life isn't easy at the moment, doesn't mean you can’t laugh.  Just because something is bothering you, doesn't mean you can’t smile.  Every moment gives you a new beginning and a new ending.  You get a second chance, every second.” Oh how I love that saying about “The Gift” - Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, but today… Today is a Gift, That’s why it’s called the Present.

3. Worrying and Complaining Changes Nothing: Oh how I loved this one… Great words of wisdom here… simply put “… regardless of what happens in the long run, remember that true happiness begins to arrive only when you stop complaining about your problems and you start being grateful for all the problems you don’t have.” Like Marc writes, “Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.” How easy it is to complain? Very! How often have you been brought down by being around someone who constantly complains or is always moaning and crying - ever been in that situation? It drains every bit of energy out of us which often makes us want to simply get up and walk away. You just have to do what you have to do!

4. Your Scars are Symbols of Your Strength: Each of us have battled it out in our lives… yes, even those who may have had everything given to them… don’t look down upon them for having a safe and secure life because they too have scars from their own personal battles. But as we struggle in life we can endure the pain. That pain will go away and it will leave scars… Marc’s point is spot on… “YES! I MADE IT!” Those scars are there to prove you did it, above all odd, and as a result you are even stronger. Yep you got it, Marc did what he had to do!

5. Every little struggle is a step forward: Now this was an interesting twist… “…patience is not about waiting; it’s the ability to keep a good attitude while working hard on your dreams, knowing that the work is worth it.” How often do we stop short of reaching our goals, our dreams? The problem is we will never know if we stop short. Look up Three Feet from Gold

But it is more than that according to Marc “…if you’re going to try, put in the time and go all the way.  Otherwise, there’s no point in starting.  This could mean losing stability and comfort for a while, and maybe even your mind on occasion… And if you want it, you’ll do it, despite failure and rejection and the odds.  And every step will feel better than anything else you can imagine.” Just buck up... and do what you have to do! 

6. Other people’s negativity is not your problem: Remember #3 above? Well not only do you not want to be the worrier or the complainer, you certainly don’t want to be around others who are; but if you are forced to be around them, be the positive one. “When other people treat you poorly, keep being you.  Don’t ever let someone else’s bitterness change the person you are.  You can’t take things too personally, even if it seems personal. Rarely do people do things because of you.  They do things because of them.” I know it can be difficult at times, but there is nothing we can do to help others when they are negative… and we certainly can’t change the fact that these same people will do whatever they can to bring you down with them. “… your life only comes around once.  This is IT. So do what makes you happy and be with whoever makes you smile, often.

7. What’s meant to be will eventually, BE: Marc should have included “if you stay the course”, which in a way goes back to #5, but with a twist; “You can’t force things to happen.  You can only drive yourself crazy trying.  At some point you have to let go and let what’s meant to be, BE.” If you follow that advice honestly, and be true to your core values, it is amazing as to what will, and what CAN happen.

Some years ago, I had accepted a temporary position working on a project which had taken me over 3,000 miles from my home and family who were in Sacramento, California. I would often sit out on the front steps during the evening, facing the west and looking up at the moon, high and bright in the sky thinking how could I possibly get myself out of the situation I was in. How was I going to find a way to move my entire family 3,000 miles across country to be with me... I saw great potential in Maryland but I did not have a job... not yet anyway. How can I afford it… what job opportunities were there and where could we live?


This was back in 1989 and I had a choice to make… did I want to go back to a business in California where I was unhappy working in a negative and dirty environment, or start fresh doing what I love, using my analytic skills that I had gained and honed in the Navy with organizations and companies appreciating this gift I had? It certainly hadn't been appreciated back home. There I was, every night sitting outside, looking up at the moon and focusing my thoughts on the situation and thinking about potential solutions. I would talk to Cheryl (my wife), not physically but while looking up talking out loud saying the same thing over and over:
This is what I want… this is what I will do… this is what is going to happen. Guess what? It came to be. Without knowing it... I just did what I had to do. 

Without going into details, what was meant to be, came to be. The power of thought and focus is nothing short of amazing. I can’t explain it nor can I bottle it… if I could wow, how rich could I be. Marc's final point may be the most important.

8. The best thing you can do is to keep going: The 10 years in an environment that was difficult for me and my family turned out to be the best thing that happened to us… but it was devastating to my Mother and especially my Father. Why? No matter how hard I tried to help my father understand just how the company was disintegrating all around him, I could no stay while deteriorating conditions continued dragging the company down... I had to take action... I had to keep going to protect my family, I had to keep going to ensure and achieve success. Yea, I often felt I had failed my Father, my Mother, even my Brother and Sister. But there was nothing I could do when they did not believe or see. Those were tough times. I just wish my father had survived... but it was too much for him in the end.

Marc was spot on “Don’t be afraid to get back up – to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again.  Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart.  Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes.” I never realized it until years later, but that is exactly what I had done. But it wasn't without a great amount of faith and confidence I had in myself which was strengthened by people I surrounded myself with. I had to do what  I had to do. 

In the end, we all have choices. We can learn to be proactive and in command of our own destiny, or we can choose to be enslaved by the will of others who are in command of their own destiny and have the desire to both leverage off of what many of us don't understand is our “neediness”, and they have the power over your entire existence. Which do we want? Which do you want? What do you do?

And speaking of neediness, in a communication class I took years ago, we would conduct different exercises in human conditions and conditioning. One such exercise was in how people reacted with people who are needy. Our class wasn't huge, but we had more than 30 if I recall. The instructor put on our forehead a sticker with a number between 0 to 10 where 0 was unattractive and 10 very attractive. We could not know what our number was nor was the other person to tell you what your number was. At the time the outcome was not known or understood, but after the exercise it became invaluable. Everything we do, the people we work with, associate with, live and play with impacts our daily lives and are the key to our success or failure. But how and what we do to adjust to challenges is what makes up our character and how well others associate with us. I am often asked what I see in the people I associate with. It is simple, they are the most "giving" of any group of people next to my brothers and sisters in armed forces. They are inspiring as well as supportive even if we are not financially connected. What other company can you show me that does that? And no where is that more apparent than within the Conquer Entertainment Division. Lifestyle Campaigns: Aligning & Leveraging Great Brands

So why is it so important for musicians to align themselves with powerful brands, styles, and great merchandise? Well there are several reasons, but probably the best is it just makes good business sense! If a musician is serious about developing a successful music career, in other words, actually make money within the music industry, it will not be by playing gigs alone. The musician must become an enterprise with a smart marketing campaign, and be able to identify, and create a strong and trustworthy relationship with the right people and companies. They must be able to identify trends including product trends, be able to identify the best brands that are beneficial for everyone, then be able to position themselves to leverage... NOT BE LEVERAGED!

Let’s look at a post from a very talented singer who shared a great sale which was sponsored by Ray-Ban, a global leader in the premium eyewear market which clearly is one of the best-selling eyewear brands in the world.

So why was this sale posted on the artist's Facebook (FB) page for friends and fans to see? Well, it could be that it was a great deal and the artist wanted to give back to fans by sharing what appears to have been of value. But of value to who? The fans? Yep! Ray-Ban? Probably, but what about the artist? You bet there was! Other than feeling good by sharing a great deal with fans, friends, and family who may be looking for a great pair of eyewear, there certainly was a financial reason for this artist to share or endorse Ray-Ban.

Because the artist is established as a popular singer having a well established fanbase, and a rather large following, Ray-Ban no doubt could have established an endorsement deal with the artist. So the question is, can any artist do the same thing? Not unless the artist or band has developed their career to the same level.

So does that mean there is no hope? Well, within the conventional music industry the answer could very well be yes, there is no hope.

So, there is no chance an unknown artist would ever have a shot getting an endorsement deal with Ray-Ban, or any major brand? Probably not!

So what chance is there for the new kid on the block... and we are not talking about the group. 

Let's look at a platform that has been evolving for the past couple of years with a dynamic and very forward thinking marketing strategy and model.
