What if You Could Practice in a Studio?

The idea is great. Locking yourself in the vocal booth writing your soul out on paper. The guitarist messing around with a riff that catches the interest of the producer and the engineer. The engineer hits the talk back button on the mixing board and says “What was that?” The guitarist says “Just something I was working on. “The producer says “Let’s lay it down.” Magically, the drummer has a beat for it. The bass player is on the same groove and the lead singer’s lyrics fit perfectly. Aren't those movies great? We see it in music videos with the behind the scenes footage. This has to be the way it’s done, right? Well, not really.

Recording studios cost money. It costs bands and artists money… Even when the record company owns the studio. Let’s say you were in the studio for a month (31 days) making your new album. That’s a pretty cool statement to declare. Now let’s say you weren't in the studio for 24 hours a day, more like an 8 hour block of time each day. The studio itself will cost $55 an hour. Your engineer is $35 hour, producer is $60 an hour. One hour of time in the studio costs $150. Multiply that by 8 hours and you have $1,200 per day for 31 days. You are looking at $37,200 to make your new album and that doesn't cover mixing or mastering; only tracking. Now how much of that money/time would you want to spend practicing? And this is a really cheap rate.

Yes, bigger bands have bigger budgets to pull this off with. When you get there, you’ll probably also have enough to build your own high quality recording studio. Until then, the garage, basement, bed room, car, storage shed, barn, etc. are pretty cheap (respectively) ways to practice and get thoughts, ideas, layout and harmonies down cold. So when you get in the studio, it’s all business.

Here is how to make it look like you were there for longer than you really were. Bring in someone to film your studio session. The producer will most likely recommend a change to a song. Whether it be an extra note or a different key or adjusting the tempo or even a change in lyrics. Record on film (or digital) the lead singer writing down an adjustments to the lyrics, video of the drummer, bass player, guitarist and so on doing sound checks, and film of the band members in the control room listening to tracking while waiting their turn. Add all that together into a video and it looks like you all were in there practicing and being high rollers in the music industry.

Pridek Studios is the perfect all-in-one source for doing just that and you don't even have to bring someone to film your studio session... it's all right there. And when it's all done, you’re now looking like a full-time professional artist. Just think of the buzz you can create, and then be part of Industry Night at Pridek Studios. Not only does it look as if you have been practicing and developing your song in a studio, but you are being asked to perform on a special event with the studio! Now that is a home run!

Q&A about Conquer Entertainment & the UnLabel Owner

Recently Market America sat down with successful UnFranchise® Owner Michele Molinaro to talk about Conquer Entertainment®. Being a product brokerage company, Market America has a very unique business approach with respect to marketing and compensation; it's all about paying it forward and putting the majority of the profits in the hands of those who are the actual performers.

Michele along with her husband Tony, are the most successful internet entrepreneurs with Market America being they were extremely successful before partnering up with Market America. Why did they partner then with Market America? I believe the interview below will help shed light, and why this company has been so successful at attracting more business professionals in today's tough economy. And when it comes to the music industry, this company has gone above and beyond when it comes to providing the very best solutions for everyone... even the fan base which has never been accomplished before. Here is the full picture from top to bottom:

How does Conquer Entertainment® work in conjunction with SHOP.COM?

Every artist (which includes but is not limited to musicians, bands, and solo singers/artists) is presented with a Conquer site as well as a SHOP.COM site after being accepted to the platform. The artist will receive retail profits from all Market America products they sell through their site, as well as commissions from both partner stores and our MA branded products.

What kind of opportunity does Conquer Entertainment® offer Shop Consultants, and how can they tap into this opportunity?

As Shop Consultants, Conquer offers us the opportunity to open our business to another industry and connect with talented artists and other individuals. The music industry is composed of so much more than just talented musicians and artists; there are also managers, attorneys, street teams, band members, and even the fans themselves! I have always said, “If your mouth is not open your business is closed.” With Conquer as one of my divisions in my portfolio, I have a whole group of individuals I can tap into to build my business and retail products.

What kind of opportunity does Conquer Entertainment® offer new and/or established artists? Why do these artists choose Conquer over other labels and avenues of distribution?

Conquer gives the artist freedom to build their brand and image without a corporate team telling them what to do. Not only that, but that corporate team that controls their every move also takes about 98% of all retail profit, which can leave aspiring artists struggling. If you look at the market today, online music sites pay the artist approximately 8-12¢ per download. With Conquer, the payout is significantly higher for artists.

What does it mean to become a Certified Artist Developer?

A Certified Artist Developer (CAD) is someone who has completed the two day Certified Artist Developer training with music industry experts. In the past, these music industry experts have included producers who have worked with Swizz Beats and Marc Anthony, and PR Professionals with over 15 years of experience. When you attend a CAD training, you will learn about the music industry, common issues that artists face, the people and organizations generally associated with the artists (i.e. manager, street team, etc), how to effectively research an artist before partnering with them, and the types of questions you want to ask an artist in order to identify important information.

Anyone who is an UnFranchise® Owner can become a CAD.  It is very important in our business to have a clear understanding of each division so we never miss an opportunity to talk with someone or build our business.  Just because we are not majoring in “blank” (blank representing a certain “major” in the ma® University) doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t learn about the products associated with other majors. We all love music; why wouldn’t you want to learn how you can make money from music sales?

Can artists act as ambassadors for Market America products? If so, how can they effectively leverage this aspect of the business?

This is my favorite question because it is exactly what Conquer artists are: Product Ambassadors to our millions of products on SHOP.COM!  Conquer artists have the ability to capitalize on the image they have created around their music to retail products. For example, if they wear a brand of jeans, prefer particular cologne, or take a certain supplement, they can capitalize on this by exposing their fans to where they can buy the very same products on SHOP.COM.  Think of all the musicians in the world; how many are offered endorsement deals with major brands? Not many, that’s for sure. But Conquer offers this to the artist from day one.

The music industry has completely changed from the way it was years ago. We no longer go to the store and buy CD’s, instead we download our music from a website straight to our computers. There are more and more artists who are taking it upon themselves to promote their music rather than waiting to get signed to a record label. When you think about it, it’s not hard to understand why having multiple streams of income would be appealing to an artist.

Does every Shop Consultant have the ability to build their business with Conquer? If so, how?

Every UnFranchise® Owner is equipped with a Conquer portal the day they register their SHOP.COM business. With their Conquer portal, Shop Consultants have the ability to promote music and sell artist merchandise. However, the real benefit comes from the artists who are also promoting SHOP.COM, because all sales generate commissions and retail profit.

A great way to learn about Conquer and become familiar with the site is to download music! While the site accepts all major credit cards, you can also use your Cashback as a payment method. What do you have to lose?

How do Conquer artists expose fans to Conquer and SHOP.COM?

The artists that are selected to be part of the platform are very high quality artists that have a strong following and presence on social media. Fans fall in love with the music as well as the lifestyle the artist portrays. Every day, Conquer artists are talking about their lifestyle on social media and connecting their fans to Conquer and SHOP.COM.

What makes the Conquer site different for an artist than others music sites online?

Conquer offers artists the following:
  • A platform that optimally displays their music and makes it available for purchase and download.
  • A profile that displays photos, videos, and a bio.
  • Their own Trend Shop, which is featured on their page. This allows fans to browse and purchase the artist’s favorite products without even leaving the site.
  • A platform that promotes artist’s social media pages by displaying social media plugins to their profiles and pages.
Michele has had an exceptional impact on sharing and educating other business owners on connecting the dots with respect to SHOP.COM, Trend Shops, and Conquer Entertainment's platform.

So what's Next?

Next Year will be another big year for Conquer Entertainment with a new release of our Conquer Entertainment website which is scheduled to launch in January 2014. And, there will be more big name entertainers coming to our site along with new features including dynamic charts and free streaming that make it even easier to discover our artist's music.

It is important to know that Conquer Entertainment artists are selected exclusively by Certified Artist Developers who again are qualified business professional partnered with SHOP.COM as well as being trained and certified by professional artists to help artists implement the UnLabel System.

Musicians, You Don't Need to be Superstars First!

Ever watch the Voice, or American Idol? There are a great many singers and musicians out there and these two American Reality-Singing Competition programs are a great boost for an artist’s career… but you almost have to have superstar qualities to even get past their auditions. So what if you have a passion for singing, and have worked at your craft at open mic nights, out at various events and have at least made a valiant effort to reach your goals of becoming a successful musician and/or singer? Well there is another way and it’s called Conquer Entertainment.

Do you recall Phil Stacey of American Idol fame? He was lucky in making the cut, and not everyone can. Being lucky is no longer needed if you have the right team supporting the building of your success.

Known Pitfalls

In a 2012 article by Steve Knopper in Rolling Stone Music, he wrote “Over the past decade-plus, the old-fashioned way of making money in the music business – selling recorded albums – has dropped off a cliff, splintered into a zillion pieces and been run over by that methylene train from Breaking Bad. Many top stars have switched their focus to selling concert tickets; while this is a prudent plan, generally speaking, it's getting trickier now that everyone else is on the road with the same idea. But there's still money out there. Pop stars just have to be creative. "Despite the fact that the traditional ways to make money are challenged – record sales and tickets in particular – there are ways for artists to exploit their talents that didn't exist 10 years ago," says Gary Stiffelman, a veteran music-business attorney who has worked with Justin Timberlake, Eminem and Lady Gaga.

But what are those ways? You can go to REVERBNATION for 10 examples, some of which are OK, or turn to advice from sources such as Music News Austin. I sort of like what Zac Shaw wrote in his article “Answering the Question, “How Do Musicians Make Money in a Free Culture?”:
First, I need to dispel this myth that musicians are getting paid by the people consuming their music. In fact, it is the labels, publishers and performing rights organizations that get paid and then distribute money to musicians. Along the way, that money is subject to all manner of recoupment, administrative fees and questionable distribution formulas that favor corporate-backed music enterprises. So forget about this idea that when you buy music, the musician is making money. Too often, musicians making money is the exception to the rule.”
Second, I need to dispel another myth — that when musicians make money, it’s because their music is good, or at least popular. It’s certainly much harder to make money off of bad music, though a casual glance at the Billboard top 100 shows it can be done if you throw enough money at the problem.
The only drawback to Zac’s article is his last line, “And remember, true musicians don’t make music to make money. We continue to rock whether it pays the bills or not.” True musicians do want to make money just like everyone one else in the world… if for no other reason than to simply be able to afford doing what they love, and that is where Conquer Entertainment shines. The UnLabel takes away both of Zac’s myths and much more. The idea that a musician has to throw money around in order to be successful is no longer an issue and when a musician signs up as an, UnLabel doors begin to open in many ways.

Phone Technology - Advanced Convenience for Consumers

With an ever growing number of consumers owning smartphones, it is becoming easier to purchase products and services anywhere at any time making it even more important for business owners to be on the cutting edge of technology.

Smartphone update

Apple was the largest smartphone manufacturer in the United States in the three-month period ending in December 2012. Apple held a 36.3 percent market share, with Samsung coming in second with 21 percent, and HTC finishing third at 10.2 percent. The comScore digital research company released the figures.

Google Android was the top smartphone platform in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2012, with a market share of 53.4 percent. Second was Apple with 36.3 percent, and Blackberry was third with 6.4 percent.
More than 125 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones at the end of 2012, an increase of 5 percent from September.

By the end of 2013, there will be about 1.4 billion smartphones in use around the world, an increase of 44 percent from a year earlier, according to a new report by ABI Research.

About 798 million of smartphones will run the Android operating system, 294 million will be based on the Apple iOS, and 45 million will run Windows Phone.

While Android and Apple continue to dominate the smartphone market, analysts predicted that Windows Phone and Blackberry will make significant gains in 2013.

The company also forecast there will be 268 million tablet computers in use by 2014. About 62 percent will use iOS, and 28 percent will be based on Android.

Did you know?

About 40 percent of smartphone users research their purchases with their device, and about 46 percent of tablet owners do the same, according to recent research by search engine giant Google.

Surprising Stats from SBA.

Here are some interesting new numbers from the U.S. Small Business Administration:

  • Small businesses create 43 percent of the nation’s high-tech employment.
  • More than 50 percent of small businesses are run out of a home.
  • Women own more than 7.8 million small businesses, and veterans own about 3.7 million.
  • Small businesses that are engaged in high-patenting activity produce 16 times more patents per worker than large patenting companies.

Small Business Update

More than half of small business owners in the United States reported in a recent survey by Wells Fargo and Gallup that they struggle to find qualified employees.

About 24 percent of small business owners said their business has been hurt in the last 12 months due to difficulty hiring qualified workers. About 17 percent of small business owners said they want to hire more employees. Of this group, 70 percent said they wanted to add staff because of increased demand for their product or service.

Two-thirds of owners said they find new employees via word of mouth, 47 percent rely on employee referrals, 15 percent use the Internet, and 9 percent place newspaper advertisements.

Job & Opportunity Statistics – What are Your Options?

Last Friday, Bureau of Labor Statistics reported “payroll employment increased by 195,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.6 percent”. These numbers have become the norm which are not positive numbers for millions searching for employment. Here are some very important statistics and facts with which to help people in making corrective changes for their future.

Last Month Statistics:
  • 58.7% of the civilian adult population of 245 million was working last month
  • Only 47% of all Americans, not just the labor force, were employed in full-time jobs
  • Of the 144 million Americans employed, only 116 million were in full-time jobs.
  • The majority of those "increased" Part-time jobs were government sector jobs.
For those who do not have full-time jobs, they are finding it increasingly difficult in getting one. What is even more troubling is where some of the jobs are coming from and the types of positions, full- or part-time.

Going back over the past 10 years of these reports, it becomes painfully obvious people who are unemployed today are finding it harder and harder to find jobs – we have “lost” nine million jobs; that means fewer businesses and fewer positions to find. Those are lost jobs; opportunities which no longer exist. That is the state of our current economy.

When it comes to the unemployment rate, how accurate are those numbers? In just the past 12 months, two million Americans have left the labor force; they are no longer looking for a job… they have given up. What does that mean? They are no longer counted in the unemployment rate which means the unemployment numbers have become distorted and actually are no longer reliable.

It is impossible to have a growing economy when the majority of the population are not in full-time jobs and as such reduces the opportunity for finding a stable career. What makes it even more difficult in finding a career is the fact that many companies are being forced to convert employment from full-time to part-time in order to save money because of Obamacare mandates. How many part-time career opportunities do you think exists where one can climb the ladder of success?

The #1 and 2 employers in America today is Wal-Mart and Kelly Services. Kelly Services provides temporary workers for companies looking for part-time workers. What a stark distinction over opportunities of the past. In the 60’s, all but 3 of the top employers in the country produced things as compared to today where only 3 of the top 15 employers produce things, goods, and products. The rest provide services like Wal-Mart. So what opportunities are there?

How many times in our history have we seen Americans create prosperity in the face of adversity?
The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes.” ---- William James
There are opportunities everywhere... stay alert, keep your options open (even if you have a full-time job), and fully investigate all opportunities… don’t just jump in. Look for businesses opportunities that provide an internship program where you are not paying for developing a new business or career.

Never ever give up… this is America, we are Americans and we must and will get back to what made us the greatest Nation on Earth.

Share this information with anyone owning a business or has an opportunity where individuals can fully explore what is possible with little or no risk involved. Let's make America Great Again!

Latest from Conquer Entertainment

Interview with Grady Spivey

Conquer Entertainment’s
Director of Services Grady Spivey
Today’s blog features an interview with successful A&R, Conquer’s very own Grady Spivey. Grady, who is the longtime friend, advisor, and managing partner for super producer, Swizz Beatz, and Vice President of A&R for Sony subsidiary company, Full Surface Records has signed major acts to the Full Surface Records company such as Cassidy, Bone Thugs and Harmony – all of which have collectively sold 30 million records, not to mention our very own Director of Artist Services. Grady also aided in the development of careers for artists such as DMX and the Ruff Ryder Regime. Alongside Swizz Beatz, Grady has facilitated and directed movie scores such as new Line Cinema dance flick, “Take The Lead”, starring Antonio Banderas. He has also coordinated the production of the “Americas Best Dance Crew” season finale featuring a Swizz-produced music selection. Grady is also on Board of Advisors for the very popular and industry leading forum “The New Music Seminar”.

Amanda Ridinger with Grady Spivey
Amanda Ridinger, CEO & Founder of Conquer Entertainment, recently interviewed Grady Spivey. Here is what Grady had to say:

Amanda: How long have you been working in the music industry and how did you get your start?

G: I have been working in the music business officially for 11 years; unofficially for 15 years. (Saying officially meaning paid work, albums released, credited work etc..)

Amanda: How was it watching Swizz grow as a producer compared to an artist? What do you think about the evolution from producer-to-artist in general?  Is that a more promising career path?

G: To be honest, both career advances have been great! Producer holds a sentimental period in our lives because we were younger and less knowledgeable of the business politics. It was more about the fun and the competitive artistic nature of wanting to achieve greatness, while carving out Swizz’s niche as a producer. Knowing at that time his competition or expectations of a hip-hop producer to live up to were those of Dr.Dre, Timbaland, Dj Primier and Jermaine Dupri, then, to experience and achieve success at that was surreal. It was a great ride and adventure. At those earlier times in his career, Swizz’s success didn't only reflect him, but it felt like it belonged to all of us who supported him.

This new transformation as a vocal artist is fun because it helps rebirth that feeling of overcoming a challenge, and brings that breathe of innocence back into the business for us. The feeling of knowing but not knowing what will happen, that first feeling of achievement in a new field, it helps make it special again. Unfortunately, we are very familiar in the entertainment business now, so certain aspects of it we are a little jaded, lol.

To finally answer your question, at all times your being an artist it’s just which side of the fence your on vocally or instruments, it’s still all art and your hoping that people will share, appreciate and understand your art form! They are equally promising and all relative; producers are vocal artist and vocal artist are producers. They share the same drive, journey and path. On the business end, they both get paid the same way. It’s all based on ownership and residual royalties; you get paid for people purchasing, buying, licensing etc. Sometimes the artist gets paid more, sometimes the producer gets paid more. All depends on the split and percentage you own of the composition. Hopefully I didn't get too record industry lingo on you guy’s, but if you’re pursuing a career path in the entertainment business, you should be able to follow or do your homework and understand what I’m talking about

Amanda: You helped jump-start the careers of artists like Eve and DMX.  Were there any challenges along the career path that you helped overcome? How did you overcome/face them?

G: Well, I helped in the jump-start of DMX’s career.  He recorded his first album, “Its Dark and Hell is Hot”, in my home recording studio. DMX and I over that time grew a close relationship. Regarding Eve, I can’t stake claim on the success of her career even though she is a dear friend and like a sister to me. I support her, have watched her grow and develop as an artist from the beginning. I have been fortunate enough to be able to help and support the career of a lot of artists and look at it all as a blessing. I am grateful for and humbled by all of my experiences in this business; good and bad.  Yes, I did have many challenges in choosing this career. As I stated earlier, watching Swizz’s career path unfold and develop was an experience and eye opener. Unfortunately, you pay for what you don’t know. There are not too many people out there who are not willing to educate you and tell you the pitfalls of the music business. Most people and artist say after going through certain experiences that, “Its the word business involved with music business” because its a business first. This is so true. It’s sad because most artist and executives in the entertainment business start out and do this for the love, and then we figure out sometimes too late that it’s a business as well.

Also, in case you meant what challenges did I have in breaking artist.  Some of the challenges I faced were that people didn't take me serious because I started out young or most people didn't take the artist serious or believe and see what I saw. However, I didn't let this stop me. I continued to support and believe in the artist. Never faltering. Artist sometimes are there own worst enemy. Drugs and different elements can get in the way and cloud judgment. That is what I have seen be the worst set back and challenge for artist. This also is sometimes a challenge for others trying to manage or develop the artist. Ego is also something you cannot let become to dominate in your character. Confidence is great, but cockiness and arrogance is a turn off to all! Making people not want to deal with you and resulting into no support leading a short-lived career.

Amanda: What do you think is the biggest challenge for an artist just starting out in the industry?

G: I think the biggest challenge for artist now a days is not having an exact distribution platform or outlet. Artists are still following the old business model formed by a decaying recording industry. There is not a platform that exists where artists can comfortably focus on creating and know their business will be properly handled. The newer artists are falling by the waste side, and so many people with talent are not being allowed the same forums as artist that have the larger fan base and following. It’s not an even playing field. Yes, its always been that you have to pay your dues and prove your value in the music business, but its just too up hill for up and coming artists and totally unfair in my opinion. Artists are not allowed to be artists. Before, artists were supported to be artistic and create their own niche. Now, it’s supported to be just like what already exist. New artist have to be concerned with marketing, promotion, and distribution in order to build some sort of success instead of focusing on what is most important for an artist – and that’s the art! You use to just be responsible for creating a hot record and a record exec would sign you, polish you, and take that cut, plug it into the machine, and take it to the top of the charts. Now, its reversed you have to take it to the top of the charts, and then take it to a record company.

Amanda: How has the music industry changed since you have been in it?  How do you think it is going to change?

G: Well, as stated before, the music business has changed drastically. Since I’ve been in it, I’ve witnessed the record companies downsize and lay off talented executives, keep only their buddies in key positions at the record companies and drop talented artists; only supporting artists that they have in these obscure 360 contracts – which is basically a super management contract from your record label to you, where your record company gets a percentage of everything you do -literally.  The industry is desperate and looking for a fast dollar any way it can. Music has become more of a promotional tool, and there is more value in everything that revolves around the business, (i.e product placement, merchandising etc), than the actual business of selling music. I see the music business becoming more and more digital-based and less physicality.  CD’s will fully be extinct within the next few years. An example of this is Dr. Dre’s, “Beats By Dre Headphones”. These headphones are owned by Interscope Records and distributed the same way music used to be distributed; marketed, promoted and manufactured in a similar fashion. This is the direction of where the music business is going. Creating revenue from everything around the music.

Amanda: If an artist was only able to focus on one thing to become successful, what would you say that thing should be? In other words, what do you believe is the one single most important area to achieve a core competency in? (If it is great music – which I thought you might go there – also give the single most important business thing)

G: Yes Amanda, I agree it should be great music. Great music supersedes all factors. Staying creative and being willing to push the envelope. Also, always creating that “wow” factor will give the edge. Remember, this is entertainment. If you think of the most successful artists, they were all entertainers in their own right. Whether it may be Elvis to Michael, or more current from Gaga to Kanye. As much as we criticize, they do create that “wow” factor, and we all find ourselves watching to see or hear what they will do next. They are true creative artists creating the trend and following some of the great footprints of the past laid before them, and giving it their own twist to create the wow; owning it, and making it their own. In business, the single most important thing is to know your business. Know how you get paid and why you get paid. This way you never have to worry about getting cheated or blaming someone else for shortcomings, because you know your business and shouldn't allow it.

Amanda: What are some of the biggest mistakes you have seen artists make/ reasons why you have seen very talented artists not quite make it?

G: Always keep your ear to the ground and listen to your fans; give them what they want. As soon as you stop doing that, you lost. You’re only who you are because of your fans and your fan base. The relationship with the fans who support you and love you is the most important. You sell and grow as a star, brand and musician because of your fans. Also trust in your team. If you look for “yes men/women” that is the worst mistake. Have a team that will tell you the ugly and honest truth. This will help you make sound decisions. Remember, change and growth is never comfortable.  If you feel comfortable while you’re at the gym, you’re not working.  It applies in this business as well.

Amanda: What is your definition of a successful artist?

G: A successful artist is an artist that accomplishes what he/she sets out to accomplish as an artist, whether it’s getting your music heard on the radio and having a number 1 record, or touring the world. It’s whatever you set out for a goal.  Achieve that goal, then create a new one and achieve that as well. Success is not failing. Failing is not trying.

Amanda: Any last words of wisdom for aspiring artists and indie artists out there who are just on the fence of reaching their goals but are not quite where they want to be yet?

G: Never be satisfied. Don’t expect any handouts or feel anyone owes you. Do not look for that overnight success story; most people work very hard and sacrificed years to get where they are, and have been working at it for years before they even start to get noticed or we acknowledge them. Nothing is an overnight success, especially now in the state of the music business. Do it because you love it and have fun in creating. Set your goals and benchmarks, and achieve your goals. Do not stop until you achieve your goals!!!!

How Facebook Friends Influence Purchasing Habits

So how does Facebook really effect your business? We’re going to talk about how friends influence purchasing habits with a really cool infographic.

At one point or another, we have ALL based a decision to purchase something on the recommendation from one of our friends. Or maybe you didn't purchase something because one of your friends had a bad experience with the product and advised you against buying it. Whether we realize it or not, our friends – the “real life” kind and connections we have on Facebook – are extremely influential on our purchasing habits. How influential? Check out this nifty infographic created by PPC Associates to find out!

What does this infographic tell us?
Females in the 25-44 age bracket are most likely to make a purchase based on a Facebook friend’s recommendation. Men 18-24 and 45-54, however, are not as easily swayed, and are the least likely to make a purchase based on a friend’s recommendation. However, that does not mean that they don’t, they just do it less frequently.

And get this: the Northeast has the highest percentage of people who don’t use Facebook, but it also has the highest percentage of people who are most likely to make a purchase based on a Facebook friend’s recommendation. Go figure!

Something else we found interesting was that people in rural areas of the U.S are most likely to use Facebook, but when it comes to making purchases based on a Facebook friend’s recommendation, suburbanites took the cake.

Hold on a sec! What is considered a “recommendation from a friend”?
Recommendations from friends can be direct or indirect. For example, let’s say you’re planning a camping trip but don’t have any camping gear or supplies. Instead of turning to ads on TV or Google search, you put up a post on Facebook asking your friends to comment on their favorite outdoor equipment store. In this instance, the suggestions you receive from your friends would be considered direct recommendations (you asked, they recommended). If your friend uploads a photo of a supplement they love (Isotonix® OPC-3, maybe?) along with the caption “Love this stuff! Don’t know how I lived without it before!” and you just happen to see it in your feed, that’s an indirect recommendation. You didn't ask for it, but you saw it, and since you trust your friend’s opinions more than ads on TV or signs on billboards, you consider purchasing that product, too. Both types of recommendations can be equally influential on our purchasing habits.

I love the KISS principle... how simple can this be?

Now that you know how influential Facebook friends’ recommendations can be, how will you use this information to build your business with social media? Post your answer in the comment section below! Share so others see how you build your business. Answers will be shared on my Facebook and LinkedIn network. What better way to help build your business than by networking?

Great Reads for Entrepreneurs

Whether you’re just starting out as an entrepreneur or are a seasoned go-getter, it’s always a good idea to seek advice from others in your field. Maybe others will have encouraging words for you as you begin to build your business. Perhaps someone else has a unique take on something you've been doing the same way for years! Whether you are a Franchise Owner, UnFranchise Owner, or other traditional Business Owner or Entrepreneur, here are some great picks for the books you need to be reading as you further your career:

What it Takes to be an Entrepreneur

In today’s economic uncertainties and scant job prospects, a great many opportunities avail themselves for those who decide to take charge of their future however, the challenge is in knowing what to look out for. There are a lot of things people just don’t know and questions that should be asked but if you don’t know what you don’t know, how can you ask the right questions?

This book navigates the challenges you’ll likely encounter as you set your sights on becoming your own boss.

The Rebel Entrepreneur

To the mainstream business world we entrepreneurs are extremely unusual. The mainstream business world doesn't understand us. They don’t understand how we do business. They don’t understand our creativity. Our drive. Our ambition. The risks we take every day. And how in the world could we be successful doing some of the things we do?!

We may not wear expensive suits. We may not be comfortable at a cocktail party or at the country club. And we may not be people who everyone in town knows. But we are the people who make this country strong. We are the driving force to the economy. - Howard Lewinter

Taking a different approach, The Rebel Entrepreneur tells you why you’ve been getting the wrong advice about starting your own business and shares real-life examples of successful entrepreneurs who did things differently.

How to be a Social Entrepreneur: Make Money & Change the World

As the description for this book states, “Don’t just make money… change the world.” There is so much good that you can do in this world with your power of entrepreneurship. Don’t forget to make a lasting impression for generations to come. Robert Ashton helps individuals, organisations and communities achieve greater social impact through economic self-sufficiency.

Who better to help with you help others... is there a better way to help others during challenging times than as a creative social entrepreneur?

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

“Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be and he will become as he can and should be.” - Stephen Covey

Here is a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, service and human dignity -- principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates. New Ideas from Dead CEO’s: Lasting Lessons from the Corner Office

Here are some questions to ask: Why did Ray Kroc's plan for McDonald's thrive when many burger joints failed? How did Krispy Kreme fail to heed Kroc's hard-won lessons? How did Walt Disney's most dismal day as a young cartoonist radically change his career? When Estée Lauder was a child in Queens, New York, the average American spent $8 a year on toiletries. Why did she spot an opportunity in selling high-priced cosmetics, and why did she pound on Saks's doors? How did Thomas Watson Jr. decide to roll the dice and put all of IBM's chips on computing, when his father thought it could be a losing idea?

New Ideas from Dead CEO's uncovers the challenges, failures, and how each of these well-known CEO’s successfully rode the waves of demographic and technological changes and examines their successes and failures. If you feel like you've backtracked in your business, consider this a resource to help you climb back to the top!

Words of Advice from the Founder of Sony

If you are in business, small, medium or large, and have never visited Addicted 2 Success, you are missing out on some excellent articles. On April 12th, Joel Brown, CEO and Founder of Addicted2Success.com, wrote a piece on Japanese businessman and co-founder of Sony Akio Morita. In 1966 Mr. Morita wrote a book titled Gakureki Muyō Ron, translated means “Never Mind School Records". How many times have we heard just how important getting good grades are, or getting a good college degree is however, Mr. Morita emphasizes that success or one’s business skills is not a direct result of one’s school record.

Akio Morita’s Success Advice? Here is Joel's breakdown for us:
______________________________________________

Why Akio Morita Believes Sony Succeeded:

  1. "Established the rule that once we hire an employee, his schools records are a matter of the past, and are no longer used to evaluate his work or decide on his promotion.”
  2. “My solution to the problem of unleashing creativity is always to set up a target.”
  3. “I believe one of the reasons we went through such a remarkable growth period was that we had this atmosphere of free discussion. A company will get nowhere if all of the thinking is left to management.”
  4. “I have always made it a point to know our employees, to visit every facility of our company, and to try to meet and know every single employee.”
  5. “The company must not throw money away on huge bonuses for executives or other frivolities but must share its fate with the workers.”

Akio Morita’s Business Advice:

  1. “Advertising and promotion alone will not sustain a bad product or a product that is not right for the times.”
  2. “From a management standpoint, it is very important to know how to unleash people’s inborn creativity. My concept is that anybody has creative ability, but very few people know how to use it.”
  3. “I believe people work for satisfaction. I believe it is a big mistake to think that money is the only way to compensate a person for his work. People need money, but they also want to be happy in their work and proud of it.”
  4. “There is no secret ingredient or hidden formula responsible for the success of the best Japanese companies.”
  5. “There are three creativities: creativity in technology, in product planning, and in marketing. To have any one of these without the others is self defeating in business.”

On Being Humble:

If you go through life convinced that your way is always best, all the new ideas in the world will pass you by.

Thoughts On Innovation:

Carefully watch how people live, get an intuitive sense as to what they might want and then go with it. Don’t do market research. I knew we needed a weapon to break through to the U.S. market, and it had to be something different, something that nobody else was making.

Do’s & Don’ts:

Don’t be afraid to make a mistake. But make sure you don’t make the same mistake twice.

Thoughts On Success:

We all learn by imitating, as children, as students, as novices in the world of business. And then we grow up and learn to blend our innate abilities with the rules or principles we have learned.
______________________________________________

What are some takeaways?

First, and probably the most obvious, a person’s scholastic abilities should not be used as “the” benchmark in determining their abilities. I personally have seen college students having extremely high grade averages lack common sense, unable to work autonomously at the simplest of tasks. And then I have experienced people who never even graduate high school run circles around college graduates. Creative abilities cannot be taught at any school; as a matter of fact schools often stifle creativity. Mr. Morita’s approach in identifying and encouraging this natural ability was certainly ahead of its time, and it is too bad it is not used by most companies.

Then there are the challenges in finding jobs. Why do so many focus only on finding a job? Why not take those years of experience in developing their own job or profession? I highly encourage people to take advantage of their natural capabilities however people often believe they either do not have creative abilities, or just don’t have the drive. For those who don’t believe they have abilities, simply plug into an organization or a business having intern programs in order to build confidence before going out on their own. Don’t look at the past, focus on the future, set goals and reach for the stars.

In the wisdom of Mr. Morita “Never Mind School Records”!
You can achieve anything you put your mind and heart into.

Creating Your Own Economy? What's That?

Surrendering to the Recession?

I recently read something that compelled me to write this post: "When the economy is doing poorly, people “cocoon” and turn to less expensive pleasures.  But rather than surrendering to the recession, what can we do to empower ourselves and create a better life?"

An NBC News Economy Watch story titled 'Discouraged' workers face tough road back to employment, white collar and blue collar workers, people from all levels of education levels and professions are facing difficulties in this grueling down economy. One person in the article spent five months chasing a job only to be disappointed and now he works odd jobs while trying to get the career he wants. Another person who lost her job has a degree in molecular biology, an MB and a master’s in accounting and spent 18 months working temporary jobs until landing a full-time position only to again be laid off after 11 months. Since then she’s had temporary jobs, but her search for full-time work has run into a major roadblock. “You can’t get the job you’re qualified for," she said. “But you can’t get a job you’re overqualified for because they think you’re going to quit as soon as you find something else.” She doubts she'll ever land full-time work and now focuses on just making enough money to pay the bills.

There is a great deal of concern about what to do, frustration in not being able to find a job, and as a result many have just given up even looking, surrendering rather than giving it a good fight. After all, our fathers, and their fathers fought for our country. Isn't that what made America great?

Stable Jobs in America - Gone!

Millions of Americans believe this is the worst economic recovery since World War II, leaving too many sidelined and unable to replace the job they lost. Gone are the stable jobs in America yet people seem paralyzed in doing anything other than looking for jobs which just aren't out there. So what are their options; what are people doing to save their family, their homes, their lifestyle?

  • Some simply give up and live off the government, if they can, but how long will that last – how long can those who are working afford more people living off of them, the hard working Americans?
  • Others are not giving up; they are the ones with their backs up against the wall who seek out and work the odd jobs and even attempt in starting up their own business. They know the risks are high yet they refuse to back down and give in. Harvard Business School estimates 95 percent of new businesses fail. And what causes failure? How many remember their first days and weeks on the job? I know I made many mistakes, and who was there to guide and train me on what to do and what not to do? Someone who had the experience, who had been working there for a long time. When starting a conventional business that safety net isn’t there and to make matters worse, the competition is doing everything they can to make sure the new business owner fails.

What about Retirement?

And what about the baby boomers who retired? According to NBC, “… relatively few boomers approaching the phase of life traditionally called “retirement” can look forward to the pension checks that helped past generations pay the bills in their "golden years." For many, the individual retirement accounts that were supposed to replace pension incomes have been severely damaged by the financial collapse and by the drain on savings from extended unemployment since.”

My recommendation is “Not” to give up. Yes, there are safety nets out there but do not give into relying solely on anyone other than yourself. What are some options?

So What can We Do? – What about Creating Your Own Economy?

If we know and understand what causes the 95% failure rate in start-up businesses, then what can be done to change the success rate? Search for and identify ways that will give you better odds in your success. Be diligent in your search, fully explore all the benefits, look for pitfalls, in other words, do your due diligence in finding a way to create your own economy.
  • What do you like to do? Identify what you enjoy doing and find a way to create a business around it.
  • If you are unsure about starting a business without experience, find an internship program that mentors and teaches a profession or business which will expedite your development
The below video goes into great depth in explaining an alternative franchise business called the UnFranchise. A business model that has seen over 80 quarters (21 years) of continuous growth. But it is not the business model alone that has created this highly unusual success record during this grueling economy... it is also the incredible people, support, and professional training which has created thousands of highly successful business owners who successfully created their own economy.

Free Web Services VS Proof-of-Concept

When searching for a "Free" service or software on the Internet: Is "Free" really free?

What is Free?

Anytime I have searched the web for anything "Free", the results have been a mix of free and not so free. How often have we seen "free trial", or "15 day free trial", or "try it free for 30 days" – you get the picture. There are always sites that lure us in with the word "Free" when in fact the only thing free may be a trial period; in other words their services or product is "not" free.

This is certainly the case when it comes to companies promoting “Free” Web sites. Yes, the company may have a free Web site but in every case free sites are limited in capabilities, scope of features available, and functionality. All too often it isn’t until the owner “Upgrades” does he/she gain access to features and functionalities specific to their particular needs and requirements. And what about ease of use? How "user friendly" is the software? And if the business owner needs assistance, how easy or accessible is a real person available in providing technical support quickly – not to mention easily understood?

With an Ultimate Online Marketing Solution – Is there Competition?

We often speak about not having any competition. In reality, we are referring to the fact there are no web site development company or person in the marketplace providing "All Inclusive" services for business owners with an “Ultimate Online Marketing Solution”. It’s not just a Web site… and at $50.00 per month it certainly isn’t “Free”, but there are certainly no hidden costs and the features, support and upgrades are all “Free”. Everything needed for a “robust” and “professional” internet presence is provided.

Identifying Needs and Requirements = Identifying the “Correct” Solution!

Accessing the needs first will identify if a simple “Free” site is best for your business. A free site like with Wix.com may be a good solution for some small-time businesses. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but is it the best choice based on the needs of the business?

For an example, compare the first two plans with Wix, eCommerce and Unlimited. In the eCommerce plan there is a Shopping Cart with the Bandwidth limited to only 5 GB while in the Unlimited plan there is no Shopping Cart however the Bandwidth is Unlimited. What if the company has a hot product, sales are going through the roof and as a result of excess traffic, the site exceeds a preset Bandwidth limit?  Having limited Bandwidth means the business owner can be forced into paying more for additional Bandwidth if they exceed the allotted amount in their plan. That is a hidden cost.

Recommendation we make for all business owners is to first identify requirements. Whether for a new Web site, or upgrading an existing site, identify what your needs are, what do you need to accomplish? What requirements are there for the site, does it need eCommerce, shopping cart, eMail, etc. And most definately establish a marketing budget if one isn’t already set up. If help is needed, identify a reputable company that will assist in identifying your needs and requirements. Any reputable Web Developer should do this at no up-front cost. Your business should come first!

Free is not always Free However…

Once requirements have been met the next step is in identifying who can provide the solution. Depending on how savvy the business owner is, he or she may opt to have several companies bid on the development and management of the new Web Site… however most small business owners don’t have time for, or even understand this process… so they opt out by shopping around. The downside to this is they never know for sure what they are going to get until after they have spent money. Most Web Developers require something upfront before even beginning to build a site. However, there is a way to get around that.

Prove it to Me!

A “Proof-of-Concept” is an excellent way to find out if the company will be able to deliver by first proving they can meet all of YOUR "identified” requirements… and do it without charging any up-front fees… in other words, do it for “Free.” Why not make companies truly earn your business? Remember, Free Web sites have many hidden obstacles and fees, and if a business owner is unaware of these challenges, it can be costly... an that is certainly not free

Check out this video for information that could guide you in the right direction.

Self-Hosting Videos VS YouTube Hosting

Everyone loves to post videos on YouTube, and there is quite a buzz about Video SEO.

What's that?

Daniel Vassiliou recently posted a great piece called "Video SEO: Focus on Self-Hosted Videos Rather Than YouTube" where he discusses the differences between hosting your video on YouTube and posting them on your own site. To make it very simple, someone searches for your item (pick your particular product or service into this scenario) and as a result a video comes up in page one... and let's say just for discussion sake it is your video. If your video is hosted on YouTube and the person goes to YouTube to watch the video, what is the next step the visitor must take in order to go to your site? They have to look for and find the link back to your site which should be in the comments section. One would hope the visitor finds the link, click on it, and goes right to your web site right? But wait, other videos are off to the right side of the page and they are competing for your visitors, your potential customers or clients. Your video now has competition.

Creating a YouTube channel and posting videos for the purpose of attracting visitors to your site is easy to do; however if you are counting on the video to point quality traffic to your site there are others doing the exact same thing and YouTube is helping your competition find your viewers or… the visitor may get distracted by these other videos and poof, they’re gone… down that bunny trail, possibly never to find their way back. At the end of the day, your best content should be featured on your own domain, to be used for drive traffic to your site without any side tracks or tempting “bunny trails”.

What's the Alternative? Host Videos on Your Site!

The benefits can be stunning however, there could be some draw backs. For example:
  1. Many providers set limits on the number of hits your site is able to receive
  2. Many providers limit the bandwidth and charge for bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data your site is passing across a network in a given period of time, usually measured by the month. Hosting providers are charged for an allocated amount of bandwidth from backbone providers and wholesale data centers and that cost can be passed on to the consumer in the form of web hosting plans.
Videos can eat up bandwidth and if popular could attract a larger audience which is what any online business is looking to achieve. If your hosting site places a limit on traffic and/or bandwidth, and charges extra for overages, one of two options are available... go with YouTube or, find a web site hosting provider that has unlimited bandwidth and visitor traffic.

Videos on your site for the purpose of sharing your product or services is huge in this day of social media mania... partnering up with the right Web site hosting and provider will cost you less in the long run.

Finding the Perfect Name for Your Business or Web Site

Over ten years ago when I was starting up my Internet and Web site business, I took some time thinking about the best name for my 2 main Web sites. My Internet business, I am partnered with a product brokerage company that specializes in bringing big name and branded companies into one location in order to make it easy for consumers to find what they are looking for, keep prices down, and eventually to give Cashback. What domain name could I possibly use that would speak volumes in what we are. Then it hit me… my wife and I were at a mall one day and it was as if we both were reading each other’s mind – doesn’t our internet business resemble a virtual mall? One where anyone could shop from the comfort of their home? When we got home I checked out some names that could fit and the one that I liked the best happened to be free, and InYourHomeMall.com was born.

My second web site happened just about the same way… what could the name possibly say that would speak to what I do? In short, GrowOnlineNow.com was created for the simple idea of being able to help small and medium size business grow their business online, affordably and now.

I picked this article for the week because some of the information found within I actually did back in 2001. I brainstormed with my wife (dared not do it with anyone I did not know or trust less they beat me to it) and I thought through what the name would say to visitors.

If you are starting a business, Web site or even revamping a Web site, use this article "How to Find the Perfect Name for Your Business or Website" as a guideline and feel free in working with someone you “trust” to help you with your decision.

50 Business & Life Lessons for 2013

Have you ever heard of Robin Sharma and Sharma Leadership International Inc. (SLI)? Here is someone who quit his job as a lawyer, self-published a book at a Kinko's copy shop (his mother edited it), and stored 2000 copies in his kitchen. His second book "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" was also originally self-published until former Harper Collins president Ed Carson discovered Robin in a bookstore.

The book, and the series that followed, have become one of the world's most successful publishing franchises. Robin Sharma is now a globally celebrated author of 11 international bestselling books on leadership. An independent survey of over 22,000 businesspeople ranked Robin in "The Top 5" of the world's leadership gurus along with Jack Welch, Jim Collins and John Maxwell.

How incredible our world would be if people would spend less time being self-absorbed and looking for handouts and more time in self-improvement and becoming altruistic, becoming part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

  12. It’s never been easier to be of service to a large amount of people (and few things are as rewarding).
  13. When no one else believes in your vision, you absolutely must stay true to your vision. (Have the guts to stay in the game far longer than makes any sense).
  14. The quickest way to build a superb business is to quickly develop the leadership potential of every teammate.
  15. A job is only a job if you choose to see your work as a job. All work is a noble sport. (The reality is all work is a chance to express your genius–and to inspire the world).
  16. People are craving transparency, authenticity and community. Give it to them.
  17. Creativity comes in seasons. There’s a time to harvest your ideas. And there’s a time to let the field sit fallow. (I’ve been working on integrating this lesson for years).
  18. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax (When you relax, your brain shifts into alpha state–the time when million-dollar ideas present themselves).
  19. Change is hard at the beginning, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end. (And without change, there is no progress).
  20. Someone’s going to win in your space. Why not you?
  21. 10X the size of your dreams because if you don’t, you’ll wish you did.
  22. Pursue excellence versus chasing perfection.
  23. Celebrate small wins and you’ll unleash a huge amount of momentum and positive energy.
  24. Learn for an hour a day, no matter what. That’s not a waste of work time. It’s a brilliant use of your work time because you’re paid to know more than anyone who has ever done your job.
  25. Why go for good at what you do when you can stand for iconic?
  26. Transform your fitness and you’ll transform your business.

  28. If you inspire one person each day, you’re day hasn’t been a waste. It’s been a blessing.
  29. Living in the past is disrespecting your future.
  30. Build an amazing career but enjoy your lifestyle along the way. What’s the point of becoming a business legend but a failed human being?
  31. Look people in the eyes when you talk to them. Smile at people when you see them. Say "please" to respect them. And "thank you" to appreciate them.
  32. Don’t be on time–Be early.
  33. The person who tries to do everything achieves nothing. Focus. Focus. Focus.
  34. Spend the first 90 minutes of your work day on real work versus fake work. (Another game-changing tactic that served me so very well in 2012).
  35. Spend time in silence each day. You’ll never do Jay-Z level work if you’re overstimulated by technology.
  36. Goal-setting is mission-critical. (Review your Big 5, quarterly goals and daily goals constantly).
  37. Your daily behavior broadcasts your truest beliefs.
  38. To have the results only 5% of businesspeople have, have the guts to do what only 5% of businesspeople are willing to do.

  40. Remember that your greatest gift is so much stronger than your deepest fear.
  41. Everyone’s in Human Resources. And we are all paid to develop the talents of the people we work with.
  42. Mediocrity is a mindset. Avoid the mental viruses of negative people.
  43. Be the most honest person you know. It generally takes 30 years to build a fantastic reputation. And 30 seconds to lose it by a single silly move.
  44. Become a lion–not a sheep.
  45. People are always willing to pay for the best.
  46. The more devoted you become to serving others, the more your career begins to build itself.
  47. Problems come to test your commitment to your goals, hopes and dreams.
  48. As you become more successful, get more hungry.
  49. Join Traffic University. Use every possible moment in the car to upgrade your skills, polish your gifts and elevate your mindset.
  50. Use your life to make the world a better place.
